Mrs. Shirley "Shirl" Thomas

Mrs. Shirley Siriene Sweatman Thomas, 72, of Columbia, South Carolina, entered into eternal rest on Tuesday, February 25, 2025 at MUSC Health Columbia Center Downtown. She was born October 31, 1952 to the late Ladson Sweatman and Patricia Whitmore Sweatman. Mrs. Thomas accepted Christ at an early age, and joined Friendship Baptist Church, where she remained a faithful member until her passing. She participated in multiple ministries: the Usher's Ministry, Homeless Feeding Ministry, and assisted in the coordination of the monthly vegetable and friut giveaway at the church. She was also Friendship Baptist Church Volunteer Secretary and assisted with the facilty rentals and events team. Mrs. Thomas affectionately known as "Popcorn", grew up in the Saxon Holmes area. She graduated from C. A. Johnson High School in 1970. She was a head cheerleader and was known to be great in math. She was a dedicated and engaged member of her community. Mrs. Thomas was a part of the Greenview Park Seniors group, Greenview Reunion Foundation, Greenview Park Gala decor committee and Greenview Reunion Foundation Hospitality. She was known for making delicious cornbread dressing and her famous red velvet cakes. In her retirement from Blue Cross Blue Shield of South Carolina, Mrs. Thomas had a passion for supporting her community by taking care of her family and friends. She loved shopping everywhere, whether it was online or in a store. In addition to her parents, Mrs. Thomas was preceded in death by her husband, Carl L. Thomas. Mrs. Shirley Thomas leaves to cherish her precious memory: two children, Kisha Thomas and Karen Thomas both of Columbia, SC; two granddaughters, Amia Davis and Karlee Thomas; four grandsons, Alexander Guice, Gregory (Kimberly) Blue, Andrew Collins, Ulylisses "Mikel" Hurndon; a niece whom she reared, Raven Watts; a loving nephew, Antwann (Chada) Sweatman; two grand nephews, Nolan pinckney and Enzo Sweatman; her loving sibling, James (Brenda) Sweatman; sister-in-law, Lucille (Johnny) Howell; special aunts, Ada Sullivan, of California, Ruth (George) Darby, and Karen Sweatman; one God-son, Cory Hunt, Columbia, SC; and a host of other loving relatives and friends. Funeral service will be 12 noon, Wednesday, March 5, 2025 at Friendship Baptist Church, 1237 House Street, Columbia, South Carolina 29204. The Reverend A. A. Dicks, Sr., Pastor, officiating. Interment to follow in Promised Land Cemetery. Mrs. Thomas will lie in-state at the church one hour prior to the service time. Public viewing will be held from 11:00 a.m. until 6:00 p.m., Tuesday, March 4, 2025 and from 9:00 a.m. until 9:30 a.m., Wednesday, March 5, 2025 at A. A. Dicks Funeral Home.
