Ms. Shehenia Long Mitchell

Ms. Shehenia Mitchell, 67, of Columbia, South Carolina entered into eternal rest on November 13, 2024 at Prisma Health Richland Hospital. The daughter of the late Augusta Lee Long and Jessie V. Ferguson Long, born on April 25, 1967, in Columbus, Georgia. She was the mother of one child, Justin Tyler Mitchell. As an only child, she traveled widely with her parents when her father, Sergeant Long, was in the military. She had one sibling (Anita) who died in infancy. Reared in Clinton and Columbia, South Carolina, she graduated from C. A. Johnson High School in Columbia and furthered her education at Morris Brown College in Atlanta, Georgia where she received her B.A degree in 1979 and in 1998 she received her M.S. degree from South Carolina State University. . Shehenia retired from the South Carolina Department of Alcohol and Other Drug and Abuse Services on April 23, 2010. Her love for serving people was always evident in the things she did and the various jobs she held. She never judged people by their lot in life but saw herself as a servant. And therefore, all her work was rewarding to her no matter who she served. She was a faithful member of Brookland Baptist Church and as a believer she held on to her faith which gave her strength that never wavered. She participated in the prayer group and was encouraged by the prayers that helped her go through her last journey. She also enjoyed her Clintonian luncheon group, loved watching old movies, shopping for animal print clothing, and Thanksgiving in Atlanta, Georgia. . Shehenia greatest love was her son, Justin. She doted on him and participated in everything he had an interest in and lovingly cared for him. The hard work she put into his care was not in vain because Justin was a committed, dedicated and loyal son to the end. He never left her side when she needed him, he was always there for her. She was avid about teaching him life skills including good manners, strong work ethics, respect for elders and other Christian values. He was a trusted companion to his mother and living in the home, he was faithful and never far away. She was predeceased by her parents: her sister, Anita; two cousins-like brothers, Nathaniel Robinson, Jr. and Kevin long. She leaves to cherish her memory, Son, Justin, aside his father Stanley Mitchell; the first cousins with whom she was raised with and called her siblings: Nathaniel's wife, Betty Robinson, DeLanda Robinson, Gregory Robinson all of Clinton, SC., and Dianne R. (Luther) Burton of Atlanta, GA. She also had a close relationship with two other first cousin, Shirley (Jimmy) Jenkins of Clinton and Kevin's wife, Frankie Long of Columbia, SC; three aunts, Nancy Martin, of Clinton, SC., Polly (Henry) Calhoun and Aurelia Peakes of Washington, D.C.; four Godchildren, Brittany, Alana, Miriam and Melissa Perryman; and a host of other relatives, nephews, nieces, and friends. Funeral service will be 2:00 p.m., Wednesday, November 20, 2024 at Brookland Baptist Church, 1066 Sunset Boulevard, West Columbia, South Carolina 29169. The Reverend Dr. Charles B. Jackson, Sr., Pastor, Reverend Nicky Wilson, officiating. Interment to follow in the Promised Land Cemetery. Ms. Mitchell will lie in-state at the church one hour prior to the service time. Public viewing will be held from 12 noon until 6:00 p.m., Tuesday, November 19, 2024 and from 9:00 a.m. until 11:00 a.m., Wednesday, November 20, 2024 at A. A. Dicks Funeral Home.
