Sergeant First Class Gilbert Robert Williams

Funeral Services for Gilbert Robert Williams will be held 11:00 a.m. Thursday, January 10, 2013 at Mount Pleasant Baptist Church in West Columbia, SC. Interment will follow with full honors in the Fort Jackson National Cemetery in Columbia, SC. There will be a visitation with friends Wednesday, January 9, 2013 from 5:30 8:30 p.m. at A. A. Dicks Funeral Home Sullivan Chapel. He was born October 3, 1943, to the late Joseph and Florrie Franklin Williams in Yonkers, NY. He went home to be with the Lord on Friday morning, January 4, 2013. On September 1, 1962, Gilbert married the love of his life, Miss Dorothy M. Crayton and remained married for more than fifty years. This union blessed them with three daughters. Sergeant First Class Williams retired from the United States Army and Postal Service after serving 20 years. While in the Army, he toured in Vietnam, receiving the National Defense Service Medal, Army Commendation Medal w 2d OLC, Vietnam Service Medal w 1 Silver Service Star and 1 Bronze Service Star; Vietnam Campaign Medal, Good Conduct Medal (6th AWD), Parachute Badge, Army Service Ribbon, Overseas Service Ribbon (2nd AWD) and the Meritorious Service Medal. He was a letter carrier for the Postal Service. He enjoyed all sports, especially bowling and coached youth basketball for the United States Army Youth Activities Program for many years were he received certificates of appreciation, trophies and several other awards. Brother Gilbert had an unwavering faith in the Lord Jesus Christ and worshipped faithfully at the Mount Pleasant Baptist Church in West Columbia, SC. He especially loved Bible Study and Sunday School. He was a family man and a people person who always wanted the best for his family. He always was willing to extend a helping hand to his friends and others. Mr. Williams was preceded in death by his parents, three sisters and two brother but he leaves to cherish precious memories: his wife of fifty years, Dorothy M. Williams of the home; daughters, Fancy Crayton of Hopkins, SC, Doretha Evans of Columbia, SC and Bianca (Edward) Walker of Cayce, SC; four loving grandchildren; two brothers, Charlie Williams of Hartford, CT and David Williams of Bridgeport, CT; a sister, Elizabeth Rowe of Springfield, MA and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
