Funeral Service will be 10:00 a.m., Monday, March 21, 2022 at A. A. Dicks Funeral Home Sullivan Chapel, 2548 Main Street, Columbia, South Carolina 29201. Pastor A. A. Dicks, Sr. officiating. As a toddler her parents brought her to Philadelphia, PA. Selma was educated in the Philadelphia school system she was born into a Christian home where she cared for her family and was a spokesperson at a young age in church. Selma accepted the Lord as her savior at an early age. Selma met her beloved husband Robert Alfred Barnwell, and they were married for 66 years. They had two children Cheryl and Byron Alfred Barnwell. Selma pursued higher education after her children became young adults. She then became successfully employed with the City of Philadelphia held positions included being a clerk. Selma was truly thankful for this job that God had blessed her with, and she often shared her work experiences with others. Selma was truly a “people person” She truly personified the love of God. Selma showed love to everybody. She gave far more than she received. Selma grasped the concept that it was more blessed to give than to receive. She like nothing. She was kindhearted and full of compassion for others. She was never too busy to lend an ear or a hand. Selma was a loving and humble sister who would allow us to call her “Thelma” when her name was Selma. Once in a while she would eloquently say “my name is Selma Barnwell”! Selma departed this life knowing that she was in the hands of God. She said when he comes for me I will go with him, and that's where she is today “with him”! Selma is preceded in death by her beloved husband, Robert (Alfred) Barnwell, her daughter, Cheryl Barnwell, her son, Byron Alfred Barnwell, her grandson Ashanti Barnwell, her parents, William and Hattie Edwards, her brother James Harold Edwards, her brother William Edwards, Jr., her sisters, Emily Edwards and Hattie M. Wilson. Selma leaves behind three sisters, Ruth Edwards McCarthy (Ralph), of Columbia SC, Vivian Edwards of Philadelphia, PA and Beverly Edwards Blackson (Bruce) of Clinton, MD; and brother-in-law William L Wilson of Philadelphia PA sister-in-law's Shirley Edwards and Gloria Barnwell of Philadelphia PA her beloved niece and caretaker Angela McCarthy of Charlotte NC, her nieces, Annette Porterfield (Sherman) of Rock Hill, SC and Deborah Edwards Simon of Philadelphia, PA; five nephews, Bruce J. Blackson of Oxen Hill, Maryland, Joel V. Blackson (Elsa) of Clinton, MD, and Ashanti Edwards of Philadelphia, PA, Derrick Wilson of Philadelphia, PA and Dwayne Wilson of Arizona; and a host of cousins and grand nephews and nieces. 2nd Timothy 4: 7-8 (KJV), I have fought a good fight, I have finished my course, I have kept the faith; Henceforth there is laid up for me a crown of righteousness.
