Mrs. Mattie Mae Whittenburg-Gordon

Mattie Mae Delores Whittenburg-Gordon, daughter of the late Pearl Brennon and Clarence Whittenburg, was born February 9, 1937. She departed this life after a long illness. On Wednesday, January 25, 2017 at Richland Memorial Hospital, she entered her Heavenly Home. She graduated from C. A. Johnson High School and met and married James Lewis Gordon shortly thereafter. They moved to New York City where she resided for many years. After retiring from the medical field, she returned to Columbia, SC. Mattie accepted Christ at an early age and attended Second Nazareth Baptist Church in Columbia, SC. Mattie was especially known for her good cooking. She made the best hash and rice and hog-head cheese! She even baked cakes and pies. She would cook and feed the entire community. Mattie would feed you but she would discipline you too if you got out of line! Not only could she cook, she would dress as well as she cooked! Oh yes, she was very stylish and always kept up with the new fashion trends. She was very outgoing and loved people. Mattie had a stroke which left her paralyzed. This would have stopped many but not Mattie. She had a hub-around wheelchair and rode around in it like she was driving a car. She went all over the neighborhood, to the grocery store, the fish market and the park. She called it “her hog”. Mattie was determined to remain independent and she did. She still cooked, baked and continued to host holiday and birthday dinners. Mattie kept up with her stylish clothes and loved for her sister Carolyn to fix her hair. Mattie was full of life. Mrs. Gordon was preceded in death by her parents, husband, two sons, Stanly and Curtis, two sisters, Rosa Whittenburg-Green and Loretta Lewis; a brother, Otis Strong and a granddaughter, Tasha Cleveland. Left to cherish precious memories and preserve her eternal love and legacy are: two daughters, Towanna (James) McLaurin of Atlanta, GA and Kimberly Ball; two sons, Albert (Contrina) Outing and Holly Ball; three sisters, Judy Ann (Henry) Mosely, Carolyn Pouge and Jeanette McGill; a brother, Napoleon Young; fourteen grandchildren; twelve great grandchildren; an uncle, James Brennon all of Columbia, SC; an aunt, Mary Butler of Long Island, NY; a devoted companion, Roosevelt Aiken and an abundance of nieces, nephews, cousins, other family members and friends who will miss her dearly.
