Ms. Janie Williamson Oakman

Janie W. Oakman was born August 26, 1948 in Aiken South Carolina to the late Hampton Williamson and the late Reva Mae Morgan. She departed this life on November 19, 2023. Janie attended and graduated from Martha Schofield High School in Aiken, South Carolina. After High School, she attended Mississippi Valley State College for two years where she studied accounting. From there, she went to New York where she married, Levi Oakman and worked for Morgan Guaranty Bank. After Levi finished a tour in Vietnam with the Army, they relocated to Colorado where she had her first child. They returned to Aiken, South Carolina where she was a stay-at-home Mom. Janie returned to New York where she had her second and third child. After having her third child, she went back to school for her bachelor’s degree in childhood development at Lehman College and continued to grow her family. She started her teaching career at Lehman High School and decided to return to school for her Master’s degree in Special Education from City College. Janie started teaching at P.S 153 in Manhattan, New York in 1984 as a Special Education Teacher where she worked for 30 years before retiring. By this time Janie’s family had grown to 7 children so she had to buy a big enough house to raise her family. She found one she liked and moved to Yonkers, New York in 1991 where she lived until her passing. She is preceded in death by her loving daughter, Danatryce (Dana) Lecole Oakman, her husband, Levi Oakman; her son-in-law, Sgt. Edward J. Frank; her brothers, Levi Williamson and Leroy Williamson; her parents, Hampton Williamson and Reva Mae Morgan. Janie is survived by 6 children with 1 son-in-law and 2 daughters-in law: Dwanyel Oakman and Gail Scott Bronx, NY; Drevann and Jessica Oakman, Yonkers, NY; Selena Frank Columbus, GA; Rasheda Oakman-Morrison and Shevon Morrison, New Rochelle, NY; Dya Oakman (Ahmalwee Dunbar), Albany, NY; Donte Oakman, Yonkers, NY; one brother, Hamp Williamson, Irvington, NJ; two sisters-in-law, Paulette Williamson, Sally, SC and Clematine Goodman, Mt. Vernon, NY; a devoted grandson, DeOndre Oakman; a caring granddaughter, Dzlyn Oakman; nineteen grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; her niece whom she served as a guardian to, Tamiko Goodman of VA; her last living aunt, Essie Bush of Aiken, SC and a host of nieces and nephews, great nieces and nephews, cousins, and many other family and friends Funeral service will be 11:00 a.m., Saturday, December 2, 2023 at Zion Hill Missionary Baptist Church, 130 Independence Boulevard, Aiken, South Carolina 29803. The Reverend Dr. Chauncey A. Scott, Pastor, Reverend Larry Dunbar, officiating. Interment to follow in the church cemetery. Ms. Oakman will lie in-state at the church one hour prior to the funeral time.
