Mr. Willie James Reed Jr. Obituary - Visitation & Funeral Information

Mr. Willie James Reed, Jr. was born on December 22, 1934 in Lugoff, South Carolina to the late Mr. Willie James Reed, Sr. and Mrs. Nora Lee Murphy Reed. He departed this earthly life to be with the Lord on Tuesday, June 21, 2022 at home with his family. He was educated in the public schools of Lugoff, South Carolina. He met the love of his life, Doretha Nelson and were married February 4, 1957. They have been married for sixty-five years and are the parents of five children. Mr. and Mrs. Reed both worked at Columbia State Park Institute/CM Tucker Center. Mr. Reed worked as a Head Chef for over thirty-one years and retired on September 10, 1987. He enjoyed cooking and following retirement, he started The Reed Catering Service and catered for Zion Canaan Baptist Church, many other churches, various organizations, and families. Mr. Willie James Redd, Jr. has been a long-time member of Zion Canaan Baptist Church in Columbia, South Carolina. He was recognized as the Oldest Male Member of Zion Canaan on October 10, 2021. Mr. Reed loved the Lord and always has a sweet spirit. Mr. Reed was affectionately known as "Reed" or "Big Daddy". He never met a stranger. To those he met, there was always kind words and great advice about life and how to live. As a chef, he was always giving tips on how to better prepare various meals. He was famous for his Turkey and Dressing recipes. His friends and family always called on him to prepare these items for special events. His joy was spending time with his family and friends. Mr. Reed was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Benjamin Reed and Richard Reed, and a son, Floyd Reed. He leaves to cherish precious memories his wife of sixty-five years, Mrs. Doretha Nelson Reed; sons, Benjamin Reed of Columbia, South Carolina and Leroy (Marianne) Reed of Seattle, Washington; two daughters, Debbie (Willie) Javis of Columbia, South Carolina and Christine Reed, of the home; one brother, Jake (Lucinda) Reed of Camden, South Carolina; six sisters, Isabelle (Boykin) Butler, Louise Anderson, Rebecca Robinson, Catherine (John) Thompson, Sallie Hayes, Mary (Raymond) Belton, all of Camden, South Carolina; sister-in-law, Bernice Nelson. of Camden, South Carolina; three grandsons, Tyron (Robin) Javis, Gregory (Ebony) Javis, and Leroy Reed, Jr.; four great grandchildren, William Javis, Tyron Javis, II, Imani Frierson, and Paris Javis and a host of nieces, nephews, other loving relatives and friends. Funeral Service will be held 11:00 a.m., Tuesday, June 28, 2022 at Zion Canaan Baptist Church, 7820 Farrow Road, Columbia, South Carolina 29203. Reverend Bobby L. Smith, Pastor Emeritus, officiating.
