Ms. Esther Rumph
September 30, 1943 - April 17, 2019
Esther Beatrice Rumph, of 170 Woodcone Trail was born September 30, 1943 in Ravenel, South Carolina. She was the daughter of the late Hubert and Ethel Furby Johnson. On Wednesday, April 17, 2019, Esther departed this earthly life. Esther, who was affectionately known as “Mookie”, attended Hopkins High School. In 1969, she moved from Hopkins, South Carolina to Trenton, New Jersey. She was a faithful member of The Greater Faith Church of Christ in Hamilton, New Jersey. She served as a Sunday School Teacher, Pastor’s Aide President, Usher and in the Hospitality Department. She was also a member of the Adult Choir. After retiring from Princeton University, Esther returned home to Hopkins, South Carolina where she joined Saint John Baptist Church and attended regularly until her health prevented her from doing so. Esther enjoyed spending time with her family, cooking her signature dishes like: macaroni and cheese, steak, gravy and cabbage; just to name a few. One of her favorite pastimes was reading. She would finish one book and start another. “Mookie” loved dressing to impress from head to toe. Everyone that knew her, loved her. She was a kindhearted woman that didn’t mind doing things for her family and friends. Ms. Rumph was preceded in death by her parents, Hubert and Ethel Furby Johnson; brothers William, Josh and Hubert Johnson, Jr.; sisters, Ojetta Johnson, Ethel Lorice Hart, Annie Saxon and Rosa Lee Castile. Those left to forever cherish memories are: her sons, James “Larry” (Nancy) Johnson of Texas and Askia (Trina) Rumph of Pennsylvania; daughters, Geraldine (Kevin R.) Watts, Sr. and Torrie (Lewis) Rumph both of New Jersey; brothers, Raymond (Josephine) Johnson of Pennsylvania and Nathaniel Johnson of South Carolina; sisters, Salley Mae (Clarence) James, Malqueen S. Castile and Martha Hunter all of South Carolina; fourteen grandchildren, seventeen great grandchildren, five nieces, eight nephews and a host of cousins, other loving relatives and friends.
