Mrs. Elizabeth Chitty Dicks

September 28, 1930 - January 18, 2022

Elizabeth C. Dicks, affectionately known as "Lil", entered into eternal rest on Tuesday, January 18, 2022 at her home comforted by her family. Elizabeth was born September 28, 1930 in Barnwell County, South Carolina to the late Reverend Eulie Chitty and Mrs. Pearl Robinson Chitty. Elizabeth grew up on a farm receiving her early education at Rosemary Elementary School, Williston Junior H. S. and Macedonia High School in Blackville, South Carolina. At an young age, Elizabeth joined and was a lifelong supportive member of St. Peter Missionary Baptist Church, Elko, South Carolina. She loved her church and once she retired in 1996 to her hometown of Williston, South Carolina. She served the St. Peter Golden Age Ministry as a member and as a Vice President. She enjoyed the group trips, social events, and the kindling of many friendships. After graduating from high school, Elizabeth attended Benedict College of Columbia, South Carolina where she received a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Elementary Education. Her teaching career began at Cassett, South Carolina of Kershaw County where she taught for a few years. After marriage to her college sweetheart, the late Mingo W. Dicks, Sr., she would make Brooklyn, New York home where she as a wife would later become mother of three children, Mingo, Jr., Larry Kevin, and Denise. Elizabeth taught New York Adult Education briefly while continuing her education with graduate study at Bank Street College of Education, and later earned a Master's Degree in Early Childhood and Elementary Education from Adelphi University in New York. Afterwards, she taught and became the Educational Director of NYC Community Child Development Center Agency. From there, she joined the New York City Public School System and remained until her retirement after 35 years of service. Elizabeth received numerous awards for dedicated continuous service as a member of Benedict College National Alumni, Progressive Benedict Alumni of Greater New York, Salley/Springfield Benedict Alumni, and the NAACP. She also embraced and enjoyed life as a Kappa Alpha Psi Silhouette member. Professional affiliations included American Federation of Teachers & United Federation of Teachers. Elizabeth was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Mingo W. Dicks, Sr.; son, Larry K. Dicks; sisters, Willie Mae and Junell; and a brother, Calvin. She leaves to cherish loving memories: son, Mingo (Shirley) Dicks, Jr. of Williston, South Carolina; daughter, Denise (Freddie) Coleman of Southington, Connecticut; daughter-in-law, Vicki Dicks of Irmo, South Carolina; grandchildren, Mingo III, Tabitha, and Solomon; two great-grandchildren, Trevianna and Gage; three great-great grandchildren, Princeton, Preston, and Payton and a host of loving nieces, nephews, cousins, other beloved relatives and friends. Graveside Service will be held 2:00 p.m., Friday, January 28, 2022 at Saint Peter Missionary Baptist Church Cemetery, 7110 Bay Street, Elko, South Carolina. Reverend Anthony F. Gadson, pastor and Reverend Eulie C. Gadson, presiding. Interment to follow therein. Public Viewing will be held from 12 noon until 6:00 p.m. Thursday, January 27, 2022 at Simmons Funeral Home of Williston, 13188 Main Street, Williston, South Carolina 29853.
