Mr. Walter "Sport" Steven Tyler

Walter Steven Tyler was born May 25, 1960 to the late Rebecca Tyler and Walter "Bo" Irby of Columbia, South Carolina. Walter grew up in the Greenview Community and enjoyed playing football at W. J. Keenan High School. He graduated from PTI Technical College and Limestone University. He served in the United States Army from 1989-1993 and was honorably discharged. He was a member of Retired Military Chapter 111. He later received his CDL license and worked for several trucking companies around the country. He worked as a Security Guard at Baptist Medical Center on Taylor Street and after completing the necessary requirements, he became a EKG technician at the same hospital. Walter was employed for 11 years as a representative for veteran's and their families while pursuing disability claims from the United States Department of Veterans Affairs. He also provided representation during appeal hearings with Veteran's Law Judges and wrote legal briefs to argue for the benefits veteran's and their families have deserved. Walter also conducted outreach throughout our state to assist veterans who are unable to travel to Columbia and assist them with their claims. He also provided information seminars to businesses throughout their communities. He received a "Thank You" letter of encouragement from President Barack Obama as a result of a lapse in appropriations impacting the Vets workflow. He was a loyal Clemson and Lakers fan, an armchair analyst for MSNBC. He enjoyed action packed cowboy and karate movies. He earned his chef's apron from his family for grilling, baking carrot cakes, assortment of cheesecakes and delicious homemade macaroni and cheese. He love to shop and decorate on holidays. They attended the DAV conferences around the country. In 1988, Walter married the love of his life, Remonder Stephanie Brown and had a loving and enjoyable relationship. He was preceded in death by Mamie Tyler, Vicki Tyler-Jodan, Nancy (Derrick) Washington of Florida, Carroll (Lamont) of Columbia, Dearon B. Tyler, Sr. (Violet) of Orangeburg, Earthell (Brenda) Tyler, Jr of Columbia. Walter "Sport" Steven Tyler, leaves to mourn, his loving wife, Remonder Stephanie Tyler; sons, Steven Tyler of Texas, Tory Simpson of Columbia; daughter, Brittney Tyler of Columbia; sisters, Annie Elam and Jackie Libby Roach (Nathan Millhouse); brothers, Micheal D. (Stacey) Tyler, Sr, and Terry Tyler both of Columbia; brothers-in-law, Robert A. (Theresa) Stroman; sisters-in-law, Yolanda Gallman, Clinteener (Frank) Danzy, LaVerne (Darryl) Riley; Uncle, Woodrow (Margaret) Stroman; Auntie, Harriet (Johnnie) Gardner; four grandsons; one granddaughter and a host of nieces, nephews, other loving relatives and friends that will miss him dearly. Funeral service will be 12 noon, Monday, June 12, 2023 at Friendship Baptist Church, 1237 House Street, Columbia, South Carolina 29204. Minister Harriet Gardner, presiding, Reverend Gregory B. Cunningham, officiating. Interment to follow in Fort Jackson National Cemetery. Mr. Tyler will lie in-state at the church one hour prior to the service. Public viewing will be held from 2:00 p.m. until 6:00 p.m., Sunday, June 11, 2023 and from 9:00 a.m. until 10:00 a.m., Monday, June 12, 2023 at the Funeral Home.
