He was born in Edgefield, South Carolina on July 23, 1937 to the late Adam McKelvin and Catherine Mosley McKelvin Chatman. Nathaniel attended the public schools of Edgefield County, South Carolina. He left home at an early age and became gainfully employed with Nigel Associates Inc. in Columbia, South Carolina where he was a professional tile stter by trade for over fifty years. His knowlege of the trade got him invited to the country of Taiwan to utilize his skillset. Nathaniel married the love of his life, Nellie (Scott) McKelvin in June of 1958 and to this union, three children were born.He was a devoted husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather. He was an avid news and current events watcher. In his mid-life he liked golf and fishing and as he got older he loved to watch golf on television, to the behest of oall of those forced to watch with him. He kept his yard pristine, taking pride in his home of over fifty years. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his stepfather, Marion Chatman; his son, Nathaniel McKelvin, Jr. and his grandsons, Nathaniel McKelvin, III and Jayson Cooke; two brothers, and two sisters. Left to cherish his precious memories are: his wife of over 67 years, Nellie Scott McKelvin; his son, Jonathan (Adrianne) McKelvin; his daughter, Reginna McKelvin Hall; daughter-in-law, Roberta Gory McKelvin; his granddaughters, Ja'Tavia (John) Bukolt, Chantel (Markeith Adams) McKelvin, Jasmine McKelvin, Katurah "Turo" Hall and JonQuel Jackson; great-grandchildren, Aareonna Caughman, Isaiah "Ike" McKelvin-Brisbone, Anthony "KJ" Perry, Jr., Marley, Brooklyn and Aubrey Bukolt, Hailee and Henrix McKelvin-Love, DonCeze "Lil Nate" Woods; special family friend, Michelle Cray and two great-grand dogs, Haven and Jessamine Hall and a host of other loving relatives and friends. Funeral service will be 11:00 a.m., Thursday, February 12, 2026 at First Nazareth Baptist Church, 2351 Gervais Street, Columbia, South Carolina 29204. Reverend Dr. Blakley N. Scott, Pastor, officiant. Mr. McKelvin will lie in-state at the church one hour prior to the service time. Public viewing will be held from 12 noon until 6:00 p.m., Wednesday, February 11, 2026 at A.
