Mrs. Morrell G. Jones

Morrell Griffin Jones, the lead lady and matriarch of the Jones family, was born and raised in the rural area of Tidewater, Florida. She was the sixth of seven children born to her parents Georgian Griffin and Walter Love Griffin on September 27th, 1946. Her early years were spent in a small country town in the Deep South with limited educational opportunities for African Americans. She was determined to reach her goals and achieved them by excelling in her studies and pursuing higher education, which was a testament to her Griffin spirit. During her formative years, she had support and guidance from family to include several educators in her community who advocated Black Excellence, drawing inspiration particularly from Ms. Marshall: teacher and mentor. She graduated from Booker T. Washington high school in Dunnellon, Florida. During her high school years, she participated in many school activities including basketball and choir. Her early life included fond memories with parents and siblings, visiting extended family in Ocala, Florida, and regular religious services at her home church Mt. Olive AME in Dunnellon, Florida. Upon graduating from high school, Morrell enrolled at Hampton Junior College in Ocala, Florida. Her areas of interest were elementary education and choir. Singing and music were of great interest in both school and community. She enjoyed participating in various student clubs and activities on campus. Additionally, Morrell was frequently asked to be guest singer at weddings in the local area. Upon graduating with an Associate of Arts Degree in 1966. She subsequently gained admission to Bethune-Cookman University, a historically Black college and university located in Daytona Beach, Florida. Some of her many achievements while at Bethune-Cookman included proudly pledging Zeta Phi Beta and an appearance on the Ken Knight TV show with the university choir. Morrell graduated from Bethune-Cookman with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Elementary Education in 1968. She attended Webster University, where she earned a Master of Art’s in Human Relations. Thus, Morrell began a 28-year teaching career and married her husband and life partner Jimmie Jones, an officer in the U.S. Army in 1969. Her dear friends described our beloved Mrs. Jones as an incredibly determined individual, a real “go-getter”, faithful, courageous, loyal, loving and kind, respectful of her elders, always willing to offer a helping hand to those in need. Morrell enjoyed great music including Whitney Houston, Michael Jackson, Tina Turner, The Staple Singers, and Prince to name a few with Whitney Houston, her favorite. She cherished her time with her children on movie and restaurant dates. She was a woman of faith, grace, class, and style; an amazing cook who loved trying new cuisines; a gracious host, and an expert at making a house a home. Some of her favorite TV and movie watching included the romantic comedy Arthur and Soap Opera Days of Our Live’s. Beloved wife, mother, sister, and grandmother deeply cherished by her family and friends. Morrell is lovingly remembered, and survived by, her husband and life partner Jimmie Jones; her sister Margaret Singleton (Robert); her two children Jimmie “Pooh” Jones II (Alexandria) and Kimberly “Choo Choo” Jones; two grandchildren Wyatt Stryker Jones and Bryce Love Jones. Morrell is beloved and is cherished by a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, lifelong friends and former students. As our family says, “Amen, Amen, Amen.” Love You…. Always Our Mrs. Jones
