Mrs. Gladys D. Barno

Mrs. Gladys D. Barno, 83, of Sumter, South Carolina entered into eternal rest on Monday, July 8, 2024 at Sedgewood Manor Healthcare Center. Gladys affectionately known as "Big Nine", was born on June 2, 1941 in Sumter, South Carolina to the late Claudia Randoph Butler and the late Mack Dingle. She accepted the Lord Jesus Christ as her personal Savior at an early age. She was a faithful member of the choir at Jehovah Missionary Baptist Church and served for over fifty years. Gladys Barno attended the public schools of the Sumter County and worked in the school cafeteria as an Aide at Eastern Elementary and McLaurin Middle Schools. She loved singing, spending time with her family, cooking and watching westerns on television. Her favorite TV show was the "Rifle Man". Gladys was united in holy matrimony to the late James Lee Barno, Sr. and to this union, five children were born. She was preceded in death by her baby daughter, Rosalind Barno; eleben siblings and her parents. Surviving are her children: Shirley (Charles) Frierson and James Lee Barno, Jr., both of Sumter, SC, Naomi (Bobby) Tate-Riddick, of North Plainfield, NJ, and Harold (Binnah) Barno, also of Sumter, SC; two grandchildren, she reared as her own, Darnell "Peanut" Green and Stephanie "Pumpkin" Mickens; a bonus child, Tom Copper; a sister, Thelma Bennett of Sumter, SC; a brother, Felix (Daisy) Butler of Hempstead, NY; a host of grands, great-grands, great-great grands, nieces, nephews, other loving family, friends and loved ones. Funeral service will be 1:00 p.m., Tuesday, July 16, 2024 at Jehovah Missionary Baptist Church, 609 Manning Avenue, Sumter, South Carolina 29150. The Reverend Dr. Marion Newton, Pastor, presiding, Pastor A. A. Dicks, Sr., eulogist. Interment to follow in the Hillside Memorial Park, Sumter, South Carolina. Mrs. Barno will lie in-state at the church one hour prior to the service time. Public viewing will be held from 2:00 p.m. until 6:00 p.m., Monday, July 15, 2024 at Jehovah Missionary Baptist Church, 803 South Harvin Street, Sumter, South Carolina 29150.
