Affectionately known as "Ray Skee," was born on September 4, 1970, in Akron, Ohio, to the late Phyllis Brown and Charles Heller. Ray entered this world as a twin and shared a special bond with his twin throughout his life. Ray attended Kathleen Mitchell Elementary and Lakeshore High, where he eventually graduated from North Clayton High School in College Park, Georgia. He later dedicated more than ten years of service to Chick-fil-A (University of South Carolina Campus) in Columbia, South Carolina, where he was known for his strong work ethic and kind spirit. Aside from being a great cook, sports were one of Ray's greatest passions and a defining part of who he was. A naturally gifted athlete, he excelled in football, swimming, and basketball. Whether on the football field, in the pool, or on the basketball court, where Ray's talent was unmistakable. Friends and family often admired his smooth, effortless jump shot and Jordan-like hops. Despite his remarkable abilities, Ray was never one to boast or seek attention. He carried himself with humility, allowing his performance, sportsmanship, and quiet confidence to speak for themselves. His love for competition was matched only by the respect he showed to everyone who had the privilege of playing with or against him. Ray will be remembered as a compassionate, loving, and gentle man whose greatest joy was his family. He deeply loved his children and cherished every opportunity to spend time with those closest to him. His warm smile, caring heart, and quiet strength touched the lives of many and will forever remain in the hearts of all who knew him. Ray was preceded in death by his beloved parents, Phyllis Brown and Charles Heller; his grandparents, Janie Sullivan (Dave), Nathaniel "Bubba" Brown (Roberta), and Lurlene and James Heller; his sister, DeShannon Givens; his brother, Duane Heller; and his nephew, Shariff Brown. He leaves to cherish his precious memory his devoted companion, Demetra Contaxes; his six children, Raushaun of Atlanta, GA; Xavier of Miami, FL, Andrew, Jayla, Alexander and Latrice, all of Columbia, SC; a twin brother, Jay Charles of Atlanta, GA, Danielle and Dion of California; his beloved niece, Tasharrah of Atlanta, GA; eight cherished grandchildren, Amari, Zacari, Yavi, Aulani, Amaya, Kyle, Christopher, and Chaliah; special cousin-brothers, Joe (Atlanta), Shaeed (Atlanta), and PJ (Akron) and a host of loving aunts, uncles, cousins, extended family members, and dear friends who will forever treasure his memory. Funeral service will be 1:00 p.m., Monday, July 27, 2026 at A. A. Dicks Funeral Home, 6400 North Main Street, Columbia, South Carolina 29203. Pastor William R. Campbell, Jr., officiant.
